No regulation of retail milk prices

Last Updated: August 1, 2012

As a result of gains in farmer productivity being passed on to consumers, farmers’ milk prices have increased at a lower rate than those of most other commodities.

In Ontario, milk prices set by dairies and retailers are determined by the marketplace—they are not regulated.

The pricing system now in place—with dairy farmers assured of meeting their production costs, and retailers, distributors and processors able to engage in healthy competition—has benefited consumers. Consumers are assured of a steady supply of high-quality milk products at a reasonable price.
