The Ontario Elementary School Milk Program, which ensures that Ontario students
enjoy the nutritional benefits of cold, fresh milk at lunch every
day, has been operating for 20 years and is administered by Dairy
Farmers of Canada. The program runs in 2800 schools representing
70% of all schools in the province. Run by volunteers in each school,
the program provides turnkey administrative support, financing for
school fridges, educational materials, promotional materials and
contests.
The program offers many rewarding benefits. Milk gives children
nutrition that improves concentration, energy-levels & learning
performance. Parents enjoy the assurance that there is a healthy
lunch drink option at school. And, it fosters school spirit and
offers senior students hands-on experience.
Dairy Farmers of Ontario and Ontario Dairy Council are working
together this year to expand the program. The goal of their joint
School Milk Task Force is to double the annual volume of the milk
used each year by introducing new schools to the program, encouraging
parent/school volunteers to participate, and increase the uptake
of students in participating schools. The Task Force is also working
to develop government agreement to support these activities.
You can help make a difference too. Become a volunteer at a school
near you. For information on how the program works and on how to
