Update on USMCA – Nov. 30

November 30, 2018

Canada, the United States and Mexico signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on Nov. 30 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The signing of the agreement is considered to be largely ceremonial. The USMCA is anticipated to come into effect three months following the last country’s legislative approval of the agreement. Until the new agreement comes into force, rules under the North American Free Trade Agreement still apply.

Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) is asking the government to honour its commitment to supporting the Canadian dairy system.

Together with Dairy Farmers of Canada and all provincial marketing boards, DFO continues to express serious concerns with the current text, which grants the U.S. oversight into the administration of the Canadian dairy system, and undermines Canadian sovereignty and the ability to manage Canadian dairy without U.S. intervention.

DFO’s board and staff will continue to engage all levels of government—provincial and federal—to minimize losses. The impact of the final text is being assessed and DFO will provide further updates.

In the meantime, producers should continue to contact their members of Parliament and members of provincial parliament to express concerns over the impact of the agreement.
