Campaign to keep dairy in Canada's Food Guide

August 28, 2017

Dairy Farmers of Ontario, together with Dairy Farmers of Canada and all provinces, have started an aggressive campaign to address the concern that proposed changes to Canada’s Food Guide will leave dairy out of the updated guide.

If the guide is published as proposed, it will actively discourage Canadians from consuming dairy products and several meat-based proteins.  This goes against the advice of Health Canada’s own expert advisors.

The changes would adversely affect the health of Canadians, with children and seniors hardest hit, and be devastating to Canada’s agricultural sector, especially dairy.

The government refuses to listen to the perspective of our industry – but individual farmers and Canadian dairy consumers can make their voices heard.

In order to accomplish this, we are asking all producers to support this campaign in two ways.

  1. Book meetings with your MPs to share your concerns about the proposed changes to Canada’s Food Guide. Materials for these meetings can be downloaded below.
    • Please book these meetings prior to September 12th when Parliament resumes.  We need MPs to have heard loud and clear how damaging these changes would be for Canadians and farmers.
  2. Share the English and French websites www.keepcanadianshealthy.ca and gardonslescanadiensensante.ca. These websites outline the importance of dairy remaining in the Food Guide. They also links to a letter Canadians can send electronically to their MPs. We need thousands of Canadians to speak up.

It is important for us to mobilize now to ensure dairy remains in Canada's Food Guide.
